Bailey Orion Evo-4: Caravan Design Evolution

A vehicle designed to allow you to get the most from the great outdoors Orion is a new type of caravan. Easy to drive, easy to park and easy to store it offers you the flexibility of use as a mobile base from which you can enjoy your chosen leisure activity. Its compact lightweight Alu-Tech bodyshell, featuring aunique aerodynamic exterior profile, assists with lowering the costs of motoring by reducing fuel consumption and consequently lowers the environmental impact of a journey through a reduction in vehicle emissions.

Building on this Bailey, in partnership with the University of Bath, has looked to take the process a stage further with the development of the Orion Evo-4. After having carried out a lifecycle assessment on a caravan from 'cradle to grave' to determine the environmental impact of each phase of development it became clear that the most significant impact came from when the caravan was in use.

Of the in-use impacts 98% can be accounted for by the energy required to tow a caravan which in turn leads to a 37% increase in fuel consumption of the tow vehicle when compared to driving solo. Clearly therefore any new design should concentrate on this area, looking at product weight and aerodynamics, if we are to make our caravans more environmentally friendly.

Aerodynamics:

All Orion models feature a unique curved rear profile which has been incorporated into the design to improve the aerodynamics of the vehicle. A well designed aerodynamic object ensures that the air flow has minimal disturbance over it by allowing the air to remain attached to the outer surface for as long as possible - which means that the design of the rear of the object is normally more critical than the design of the front. Orion's more streamlined, curved rear profile therefore ensures thatthe air is attached to the surface longer thus reducing the overall drag on the caravan which in turn improves the fuel efficiency of the tow vehicle.

In-house testing conducted by Bailey indicated that, when compared to a conventional caravan of equal size and weight, towing the Orion results in an improved fuel efficiency of around 8% roughly equating to an improvement of 2 miles per gallon (using a standard family estate car).

Weight is distributed in a traditional caravan in the following manner:

Bailey chose to focus on reducing the weight of the interior components as altering the body shell and chassis could potentially compromise the integrity of the caravan.In doing so the company was careful not to achieve this by removing key elements of the specification as experience has shown that this will reduce the desirability and saleability of the finished product.

Instead Bailey considered how people actually use their caravans for the answer, particularly by looking at their preferred choice of power source. With only 8.5% of respondents in the Bailey survey claiming they regularly use the 12v batteryas their primary power source this became an obvious avenue to explore.

Converting a vehicle from a multi-source to a single-source does have a significant impact on both the weight and cost of the product through the simplification of the sourced components and caravan services as well as the modification of the furniture.Examples of how this was done include:-

* Replace the separate microwave oven and Thetford Duplex oven and grill with a Daewoo Combi-Microwave
* Replace Thetford 3-burner gas hob with a 2-burner gas hob and a single electric hotplate unit (provision for the gas burner was made through the addition of a small locker positioned in the centre of the caravan to further enhance vehicle stabilityand reduce nose weight)
* Replace dual source gas and electric refrigerator with an electric only version
* Replace dual source gas and electric Truma water heater with a Truma electric only version
* Replace dual source gas and electric Truma space heater with an electric only plinth version
* Replace battery box with simple mains plug in socket
* Simplification of caravan electrical wiring and gas plumbing systems
* Modification of the caravan furniture

Orion Evo-4:

The resulting Orion Evo-4 is identical to the best-selling Orion 430-4 model in terms of both size and layout and yet weighs a substantial 100kgs less. This will not only be good for the environment in terms of reducing vehicle emissions but also good for potential buyers in that the simplification of the caravanservices and appliances means the Orion Evo-4 is also approximately £1,000 less expensive to build.

The Orion Evo-4 will be unveiled for the first time at the Motorhome Caravan and Camping Show 2012, ExCel, London (Stand N160 Entrances N4 & N5) on 14th - 19th February.

Hot on the heels of the Pegasus Rimini, Bailey will be adding the new Unicorn Cadiz to its touring caravan model line-up in the New Year.

The Rimini, which is the first Bailey model to feature full length twin single fixed beds, was the surprise package at the recent Motorhome & Caravan Show where it was second only to the ubiquitous Unicorn Valencia in the best-sellers list. This creates the spacious open plan feel, not typicallyfound in a layout of this type, which is currently proving universally popular with today's buyer caravan buyer. A well-equipped centre kitchen and a parallel bed front lounge, with a u-shaped seating configuration, complement the rear bedroom andtransverse end washroom perfectly to create a caravan which is both comfortable and practical to use.

Bailey Caravans have been developed using over sixty years experience in caravan design and are manufactured in a state-of-the-art production facility to provide the very best in touring home quality and value.

Firmly established as the UK's favourite touring caravan brand Bailey is now looking to expand into more overseas markets. The company already has an established presence in New Zealand and is now setting its sights on the larger Australian caravanmarket which is a similar size to that of the UK and one which is growing rapidly on the strength of a buoyant economy.

For the first time therefore Bailey will be introducing a selection of models from its award-winning Orion, Pegasus and Unicorn ranges into Australia. Models have been tailored to suit the specific requirements of the market and as such will includeitems such as large on-board water tanks, air conditioning units and pull out sun canopies in the standard specification. As in the UK the caravans are fitted with the latest AL-KO galvanised steel chassis, stabiliser hitches, shock absorbers and the new AL-KO ATC trailer control system (range specific).

All models are built using the high performance Alu-Tech bodyshell construction system. Seen by many as the most significant caravan production design for over 30 years this award-winning technology provides vehicles which are both moredurable and more weatherproof and yet at the same time lighter to make them accessible to a wide range of tow vehicles. The superior thermal properties of the shell will also allow you to holiday all year round by keeping you warm in the winter andcool in the summer as well as making the caravan more economical to own.

Bailey Australia's head office is located in Melbourne and the new team there is currently in the process of setting up an Australia-wide Dealer Network who will provide customers with a comprehensive sales and after-sales support service.

BAILEY DEMONSTRATES ITS CONFIDENCE IN THE MARKET WITH FURTHER CAPITAL INVESTMENT

Bailey of Bristol has demonstrated its confidence in the UK leisure vehicle markets by investing a further £1/4 million in capital equipment.

Specifically Bailey has looked to increase the capacity of its laminating plant which manufactures the caravan and motorhome floor panels. The new Alu-Tech construction system, featured in all of its caravan and motorhome ranges, places greater demandson this part of the production process as all body shell panels are fully laminated. This gives the overall structure far greater strength and rigidity when compared to the classic construction assembly which consists of a combination of fullyand partially bonded panels.

This new production cell uses the latest high tech computer controlled machinery which will improve both production efficiency and accuracy. In production sequence order the new line comprises of the following pieces of equipment:-

* Assembly Station
* Assembly of individual components used in panel make up using a laser positioning jig for increased consistency
* Bead Applicator
* Bead application bonding system giving a better bond integrity than traditional spraying method
* Vacuum Presses
* A four tier 'multi-daylight' vacuum press arrangement that allows individual loading of panels which also results in better bond integrity
* CNC Router
* Fully automated machining preparation of caravan floor panels in preparation for the assembly process

During the Autumn shut down period Bailey will also take the opportunity to begin developing the additional 4.5 acres of land it acquired in January 2009. This extra space will be vital for the company's future expansion plans in terms of increasingthe production capacity of its South Liberty Lane production facility. Once the land has been cleared the first new building will be a dedicated motorhome pre-inspection dispatch centre where both the cab and habitation area of the vehicles can befully commissioned prior to being transported to retailers.

The decision to commit to this new investment has been made following a successful result at the recent Motorhome and Caravan Show where the company secured in excess of £13 million worth of retail orders for its caravan and motorhomes, as wellas a significant commitment from the retailer network in terms of new display model and stock orders. As a consequence the Company's forward order book now extends well into the New Year. This combined with the low levels of existing product withinthe network puts Bailey in a strong position to cope with the uncertain economic climate going forward.

BAILEY ANNOUNCES A PRICE FREEZE ON ALL PRODUCT RANGES FOLLOWING NEC SHOW SALES SUCCESS

Bailey of Bristol has enhanced its reputation for producing market leading value for money caravans by announcing a price freeze on all of its touring caravan model ranges. As a result the recommended retail prices for these products will remain unchanged from current levels (as at 12th August 2011 price list) for the remainder of this calendar year.

This decision follows a very successful week at the Motorhome & Caravan Show where Bailey secured retail orders for caravans and motorhomes to the value of £13 million - a total which has been exceeded only once before in the company's sixty year historyand one which re-affirms Bailey's position as UK's favourite touring caravan brand.

Retail sales at the event were split evenly across the four caravan product ranges, Unicorn (36%), Pegasus (32%), Olympus (20%) & Orion (12%), showing not only the current strength of the portfolio as a whole but also the diverse nature ofvisitors and buyers attracted to this record-breaking show.

Sales success on stand was mirrored in the results of The Caravan Club Design Awards Competitions announced during the exhibition - where models from the Bailey portfolio won four individual awards, more than any other manufacturer, and three top three placements. Again reflecting current sales patterns each of the Bailey product ranges now feature a category award winner.

The decision to hold prices is out-of-step with some of the other manufacturers who have implemented price increases on their model ranges following the show, meaning Bailey products now look even better value in the current market place.Understandably in the current economic climate these retail prices cannot be guaranteed indefinitely and this offer will be for a limited period only.

With overall standing stock in short supply availability for all models is likely to be strictly limited, therefore anybody considering a new Bailey caravan is advised to contact their local retailer as soon as possible to ensure that they do notmiss out.
