Cooker igniters
by: Steve R

In actual fact a lot caravan cooker igniters are piezoelectric, which means they are self generating no batteries. The spark is generated by compressing a crystal inside the unit. Even if the igniter IS battery operated the below checks still apply...Check the wire coming out from the rear of the press button unit to make sure its still connected, follow the wire through the cooker and make sure it is not shorted to earth (frame of the cooker). Also make sure there is a gap between igniter tip and the burner. If its touching the burner it will be shorted to ground and will not work sometimes the ceramic casing of the igniter tip (which insulates it from earth) cracks, Examine the igniter if its cracked the electricity will find its shortest path to earth and instead of jumping across the tip of the igniter by the burner it may well be jumping across the cracked insulator. Tip to find a cracked insulator... Operate the igniter button in the dark and watch for the spark!
