Charging Leisure Battery In 1993 Elddis Hurricane Caravan

Do I just plug in mains hook up lead and the zig 2000 unit automatically charges the battery or do I have to set one of the switches? Thankyou.

I have not used a zig unit for ages and going by memory I think that all you have to do is just make sure the the power switch is on for it to work. However, if there is anyone out there who uses this type of unit and can offer some advice, please contact us and we will pass it on.

Charging Leisure Battery in 1993 Elddis Hurricane Caravan
by: Mrlifter

Basically yes thats all you do but either make sure or get some one to check the connection terminals from the output.I had a Hurricane some years ago and as I was in Forklifts I purchased a very expensive Deep Cycle battery and it failed after about 2 years. My daughter has a Hurricane and it had taken 2 batteries out. I have just aquired another battery for them and before connecting checked out the 12v system and found that without a battery connected the charger was not supplying 12v as it should do. On investigating I found the output wires were not connected correctly. The correct connections are 1 & 4 as per the Zig manual supplied with my own caravan. Once connected correctly the 12v system worked even without a battery connected and wheb a battery was connected everything checked out ok. Hope this helps but if not leave another message and I will give my phone No.

My FIRST caravan!! & battery isn't charging?
by: Dani Girl

I have just bought a 1994/95 SWIFT Challenger, I have had it on charge now for 2 days and the battery doesn't seem to be charging at all.
Has any one else had this problem before or does any one have any ideas what to look for.

Fully Charged Battery Doesn't Register On Amp Window Unless Connected To Mains

by J Rowlands
(West Yorks)

We had a problem last time out with our electrics on our Bailey Pageant Champagne 2009 model. The local dealer fixed it saying it was the heater thermostat that had blown. Now the battery doesn't register if connected on its own. If connected to the mains it is over half way full. We bought a new battery thinking it was done and the new one does the same....very annoying.
Any ideas?

This may sound a stupid question, but have you made sure that the 12v master switch is on. This switch has to be in the on position for the volt meter to work. Apart from that, this has stumped me and all I can suggest is that you take it back to the dealer and ask them to have another look at it.

We had the same problem and it was the 15 mp fuse that had blown in the fuse box, try swapping the fuse with the fridge fuse for example and see if this works

Battery Charger Not Working

by Bert
(Glossop)

Hi

Where can I get a like for like battery charger for my 2003 Bailey Ranger 460-2?

Thanks

The best place to find any spare parts for a caravan is usually a Breakers yard. If you look on our website on the page called Caravan Spares there is a list of breakers on there. Telephone them or e-mail them with your requirements and, if they have it, they will usually be able to post the item to you. Hope this helps.

Battery For Caravan Cooker

by Wullie Dey
(Fife)

Where is the battery compartment for a caravan cooker? Thanks

The majority of ovens in caravans run off gas and do not have batteries. If your oven has spark ignition, that is controlled by your 12v system, which in turn is run off your main caravan battery.

Cooker igniters
by: Steve R

In actual fact a lot caravan cooker igniters are piezoelectric, which means they are self generating no batteries. The spark is generated by compressing a crystal inside the unit. Even if the igniter IS battery operated the below checks still apply...Check the wire coming out from the rear of the press button unit to make sure its still connected, follow the wire through the cooker and make sure it is not shorted to earth (frame of the cooker). Also make sure there is a gap between igniter tip and the burner. If its touching the burner it will be shorted to ground and will not work sometimes the ceramic casing of the igniter tip (which insulates it from earth) cracks, Examine the igniter if its cracked the electricity will find its shortest path to earth and instead of jumping across the tip of the igniter by the burner it may well be jumping across the cracked insulator. Tip to find a cracked insulator... Operate the igniter button in the dark and watch for the spark!

Battery Charging Avondale 435 1996

by Jay
(Ipswich)

Can someone tell me if when I plug the van into mains, should this charge the battery, and also should all the lights work off the mains and not drain the battery?

Once hooked up to the mains, your battery should be trickle charged by your charger in your caravan. As for your lights, I should imagine that the majority of your lights run off the 12v system even when plugged into the mains. This should not drain your battery as it is constantly being trickle charged. Some of the main lights however might run on 230v.

Battery or Generator

by Gary

I'm getting my first caravan in April and would like to know the following - we're buying a touring caravan (Knaus 750fku) and I'm wondering if I should buy a good quality battery with charger or should I buy a Honda generator? Additionally, do I need to use a battery with the generator? Apologies if this is a stupid question! Please advise. Many thanks,Gary

Hi Gary

Ask the dealer that you are buying the caravan from to supply you with a leisure battery. Just remember that the higher the Ah (Amp hours) rating, the longer the battery will last when not connected to an electric hook up. The caravan should have a built in charger which will charge your battery when you are towing and also when you are connected to an electric hook up.

If you intend using your caravan on sites that do not have an electric hook up and dependent on the length of your stay, then a generator might be a good idea but is not always necessary.

Battery Update
by: Gary Smyth

Cheers Nigel. Thanks for your advice. I contacted the garage and it seems that the caravan comes with a battery as part of the mover unit. He said he can make it power the rest of the caravan for an additional charge, so I've gone ahead and ordered it. On reflection I'm going to hold out on a generator until I really feel I need one. Since ordering this caravan I seem to have become obsessed with gadgets etc.(typical man I suppose).

Caravan Battery - Charging From The Car

by Mike Jones
(Congleton, Cheshire)

Caravan in question is a 2004 Lunar Quasar 462. On doing some green field caravanning recently, almost flattened my leisure battery due to lack of sunshine for my solar panel. So, had a thought, connect the car up to the caravan and run the engine for a bit which would get a bit of juice in. Only problem is, with engine switched off and caravan electrical panel set to 'car', get output from car. However, running engine switches of all caravan circuits - apart from fridge. No lights, nothing.

Probably a bit of a daft question really, but is this what is supposed to happen?

Thanks in advance.

Mike Jones

Basically the answer to your question is Yes. Most caravans have 2 relays to comply with the European Standard EN 1648-1.

Relay one allows the car battery to supply caravan appliances via the Battery selector switch when the car engine is not running. However, when the car engine is running, the relay ensures that a charge from the car's alternator is fed to the caravan battery automatically.

Relay two ensures that no caravan 12V appliances other that the fridge will operate when the car engine is running irrespective of the Battery selector switch position.

Battery charge up when being towed

by Frank
(Liverpool)

Hi
Should my caravan battery be charging when being towed?
Thanks

You can only charge your battery when towing if you have the supplementary 12S socket (grey) fitted to your towbar. This socket also operates your reversing lights on your caravan and also allows you to run the caravan fridge when towing (you must turn the dial on the fridge to car setting).

Caravan battery

by Dave Long
(Bucks, England)

What type of battery do I need to purchase for my caravan (which is a Swift Doubleete, 4 berth with a mover?)
Many thanks.

As movers tend to drain caravan leisure batteries quite quickly, I would advise you to go for the highest Ah (amp hour) rated leisure battery you can afford. An 110Ah leisure battery should be fine.

Battery

by Fiona
(Axbridge)

Do you know what Leisure battery I would need for my Avondale 435 caravan?

It all depends on how much you are going to use it. If for most of the time you are going to be hooked up to site electric and you do not have a motor mover, then I would go for a standard 75Ah leisure battery. However, if you are going to use your caravan with no electric hook up, then I would by an 110Ah leisure battery. The Ah stands for amp hours which indicates how long the battery will last before requiring a re-charge. If you decided on the larger Ah rated battery, measure your battery box before you buy one to make sure the battery will actually fit in it.

My caravan is fitted with a Truma single axle mover, there appears to be lots of types of batteries that "may do the job".
Can you please advise on the best battery possible for suitable use with mover and all the other 12 volts bits and bobs fitted in most caravans

My advice would be to firstly measure your battery compartment and the take these measurements to your local dealer and ask for the highest Amp Hour battery you can afford. The dealer should be able to tell you if it is a suitable fit and if it suits your needs.

Battery Size for Compartment

by Janey
(Lancaster)

Are 75ah batteries a standard size? Our newly purchased Bailey Senator Wyoming 2006 says it will accommodate a 90 amperes/hours capacity battery. If I buy a 75ah battery will this definitely fit in the compartment? My caravan is sited 120 miles away but prices are cheaper here where I live.
Many thanks anyone! JG

A 75Ah battery will be smaller than a 90Ah battery, so if you are going to buy a 75Ah battery it should definitely fit in your battery compartment.

Battery Charging

by Tony

My caravan will be in winter storage, I need to keep the battery connected due to the tracker and alarm system, how do I keep the battery charged? Thanks

The only way of really keeping your battery charged is to hook up to an electric point and trickle charge via your on board charger. If there is no electric point available, you could try a solar panel to keep your battery charged.

Damp and cracked side electric battery and mains box

by John
(Scotland)

Hi, I have just bought a 1989 Abbey 418 T which is in great order - except there is some damp which I think is due to the side electric box and lid being cracked. Can this be replaced and the damp fix - or is the caravan a gonner. The damp is slight to each side and lower than the plastic box.

Can anyone tell me a ball park cost of getting a small area of damp and the box professionally fixed - just roughly , so that I know whether to cry or get it done !,

thanks

The cost is dependent on the size of the problem. I should take your caravan to your local dealer and ask the to take a look and give you a quote. They should also be able to tell you it it is worth doing or not.

There are no guarantees that your battery will last. However, I left my battery conected over winter once and it still held it's charge.

Battery Low Light

We have just been for our first trip in our Cotswold Windrush caravan and even when hooked up to mains the battery low light stays on, we are real novices, can any of you good people help us please.

You might have an old Leisure battery which is not holding a charge. Try and borrow one from someone you know and see if that works. If it does, then you will probable have to change your battery.

We have just bought our first caravan and find the electrics somewhat confusing. The caravan has a fridge and we have the black and grey connectors to the car. There is no on-board charger.
Hope someone can help with the following, please:
1. What would be the benefit of having and on- board charger? We already have a separate mains charger for using on car batteries so could use that for topping up the leisure battery as & when required from the van 240V sockets provided we are on electric hook-up. some of the van systems seem to run only on 12V.
2. without an on-board charger will the car still top up the van battery when towing? how do we know that's working properly?
3. where are the relays for split-charging etc - in the car or the van? How do I know if they are working?
4. which systems on the van work on 12V and which on 240V. is there anything which is usually dual voltage?

Thanks

Routing Leads from Solar Panel (Battery Trickle Charger) to Battery

by Andrew Johnson
(Durham City)

Do not want to run lead out of the window into battery box housing. Thought I might run lead (carefully) under bed then drill hole in battery box and run cable through. Of course I would use a grommet and seal hole completely. Is there a safety issue I may be overlooking?
Regards,
A Johnson.

I can't see a problem doing it that way, but you could always leave the solar panel outside the caravan and use the cut out on the battery door panel that is used for your electric hook up cable.

Battery upgrade for Bailey Pageant Monarch 2006

Caravan Battery and Hook Up?

by Sue
(Newcastle Upon Tyne)

Hi, we are 1st time caravaners and have just bought an old caravan, Abi Sprinter 1995. We are a bit lost as to why we were told we need a battery for the electrics when in fact we are sited somewhere where we will be using electric hook up. We will not be towing this apart from storage to site. We will be using electricals in the awning too. We would appriciate any advice regarding this.
Thanks

The reason for having a battery is that it operates the 12v system. This runs all the low wattage items such as water pumps, striplights etc. Also if you have a power cut, you will still be able to use the lights and water.

Leisure Battery Charging

When I tow the caravan,I switch the fridge over to 12v, does the car charge the leisure battery as well as run the fridge when the car engine is running. Also, does the leisure battery get charged when the van is connected to 240v supply on site?

Run the fridge and charging the battery when towing will only work if you have the supplementary 12S socket(the grey one) fitted to your car.

Basically you will need a standard leisure battery. You cannot use a car battery, it must be a leisure battery. They do come in differnt sizes depending on Ah (Amp Hours). If you go to your local caravan dealer, they will be able to advise as to what is the best size for your needs.

Battery for 1999 Elddis Wiston

My wife and I are buying an Elddis Wiston caravan 2 berth. It hasn't got a battery and we are not sure what the correct size or ampage is.

If you intend to use the battery aloy and if you have a motor mover fitted to your caravan, then I would go for the highest amp battery that will fit inside your box. Measure the base and height of your box and take these details with you when you buy your battery. The standard 85 amp caravan should fit, but the 110 amp batteries tend to be larger.

Battery Charging

Is it better to leave the caravan connected to the electricity supply when storing over the winter period - which will allow the battery to stay charged?

We tend to remove the battery in the winter and store it in a warm dry and well ventillated room. Periodically we check and trickle charge the battery to keep it at it optimium charge.

Just remember that when removing the battery, you should remove the negative terminal first and when you re-install the battery, connect the negative terminal last. Once you have removed the battery, you should coat the terminals with grease or vaseline.

There is obviously a wiring fault which needs to be looked at straight away. You need to take the caravan back to where you bought it from and ask them to rectify the fault for you.

Caravan battery not charging from electric

by Ciondy
(Bromley )

We are new to caravanning and have an ABI Sprinter 450CT. We have just come back from The New Forest where out battery was not charging from the electric. We drove there with the fridge on and charging from the car. After 1 day the lights stopped working. We were plugged into electrics. My husband charged the battery from our car and it then worked for a bit and then died again. We had to do this each day and it then only worked for a bit. Does this mean that the battery is not working or does it mean that the onboard charger is not charging from the electrics. It seems it is charging when plugged into the car (towing) but not much?

I pressume you have the double sockets on the towbar of your car. If this is the case and you had both sockets plug in from the caravan leads, it sounds as if the on board charger is working. You might want to check how old your leisure battery is. It could need replacing as it is not holding a charge. You could take the battery to your local garage and ask them to check the battery for you. Just remember, if you do change your battery, you must buy a leisure battery and not an ordinary car battery.

Battery deceased or hibernating?!

by Lizzie
(Westcliff on Sea, Essex)

Is it possible to recharge my caravan battery I think it may have gone completely flat it's a 110 amph deep cycle one, I accidentally left the switch pointing down to van battery when we were away about 3 weeks ago and the switch next to the hot water heater and the one next to the fanmaster warm air heater was on(the type with fuses) the van is a 1998 Bailey Pageant Champagne. The voltmeter is reading prety much zero! Have I killed it? Is there somthing else I should be checking? I'm new to this so any help would be much appreciated many thanks, Lizzie.

Leisure batteries are designed to be charged and discharged. However, most manufacturers advise that you should not wait too long before a recharge and that a leisure battery should not be completely discharged as this can cause permanent damage. I would suggest that you try a recharge on your battery and then see how long it holds it's charge. If you find that it drains the charge quickly, you will probably have to invest in a new one.

Battery Charging

We own a Bailey Orion 400/2 2011 on which we use a motor mover. Will the onboard charger fully charge the battery, or do I need to use a leisure battery charger every so often, to ensure the battery is fully charged. Thanks Ade.

It will all depend on how often you use the mover. Movers do tend to drain the battery. We had a mover on our previous van and had no trouble with the battery. If you have a mover, it is always adviseable to have the highest Ah (amp hours) leisure battery possible.

Caravan Battery.

by Barbara
(Bath)

This weekend we noticed a strong sulphur smell coming from our caravan. On closer inspection we found the battery emitting toxic fumes and was red hot. The caravan was filled with these toxic fumes.
It was hooked up to the mains. We believe the charger is faulty. The fumes we assume are sulphuric acid. We have washed the entire interior with a strong sodium bicarbonate solution but we know that sulphuric acid is very toxic and corrosive and may eventually rot soft furnishings. Any advice would be welcomed!

You really need to have this looked at by your local dealer. They should be able to correctly diagnose what the fault is and then fix it for you.

Connection of battery to caravan - not working

by Gaynor
(Walsall)

I have just connected a newly charged battery to the caravan but it's not working. We have tried everything, does anyone have advice or help please ??

Your 12v system is protected from over loading by an in-line fuse. The fuse is connected to the feed from the battery's positive terminal. If you trace this feed to inside your caravan, you should find it. Try changing the fuse and see if that works.

I have just bought a 490l Swift Challange 2005. I can't get the lights or anything to work on 12v. It works fine when connected to mains. I have installed a new battery.

It could be that the in-line fuse which is connect to the feed from the battery's positive terminal has blown. If you trace the positive feed from your battery to inside your caravan you should find it. Once you have found the in-line fuse holder, change the fuse and see if that works.

Ampere Hours for Bailey Caravan

by Trevor
(Essex)

I have a 2005 Bailey Senator Wyoming caravan. Please could you tell me as to what ampere hour battery do I need for this caravan. Many thanks for your help.

This would be dependant on how much you are going to use you battery. If you have a motor mover fitted to your caravan, then I would suggest that you buy an 110 AH battery, but make sure that it will fit in your battery compartment. If you don't have a mover and are hooked up to the mains when on site, then a standard 85 AH battery should be OK.

What you need to do is to measure the dimensions of your battery compartment. With that information you should be able to determine what size battery will be suitable for you. Just remember that the larger the capacity or Amp Hours(Ah) of a battery, the larger in size they get.

most caravans have an in built charger which is normally mounted at the rear of the battery box. This should charge your battery when connected to the mains supply.

New Leisure Battery

We are complete beginners to caravanning.
Just bought a new 110ah leisure battery. Do we need to charge this with a leisure battery charger or will a car battery charger do, before we connect to the caravan.

Or can I connect to the caravan, then connect to the mains and charge the battery that way.

Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks
David

If you connect the battery to the caravan and then connect to the mains, you should be able to charge your leisure battery that way.

Bailey Senator Indiana Battery When Towing

I have just bought a Senator Indiana and would like to know if the leisure battery is being charged whilst it is being towed. I have a grey connection. Also does the fridge 12 volt need to be selected for the leisure battery to be charged if indeed charging takes place from the car.

The grey connection or Supplementary Socket (12S)does charge your leisure battery and runs your fridge when towing, but the fridge must be set to the leisure battery setting. The 12S socket also operates the reversing light and sensing device.

Hi
We have a 2007 Coachman VIP 520/4. all as been working fine but now, found corrosion on positive terminal of battery. Cleaned up, checked battery fully charged, reconnected but no power. All works fine on ehu. Fuses all ok. As anybody experienced this before. Any advice welcome.

Have you made sure that the switch on the control panel is set to operate ooff the battery?

Why has by caravan battery got so hot?

by Jacque
(Arno bay, SA, Australia)

My caravan battery has become really hot that it smells in the van, does it need to have distilled water added to it? All of our lights and so on run through the van even when its plugged into the mains. We have been living in our van for a year now. Please can someone help.

It depends on whether you have a sealed battery or not. You are probably best to have you battery tested. Any good garage should be able to do ths for you. If you do need to replace your battery, I would advise that you buy the best leisure battery that you can afford.
