Caravan Flooring

We have recently bought our first caravan and we are replacing the carpet in the bathroom with lino as the old carpet was in a shocking state. In removing the old carpet I have had to cut through the brown plastic sheet that runs along both sides of the van under the carpet. Please could you tell me what the purpose of this is and if I need to put it back down or will the lino carry out the same job of waterproofing or whatever it's for?

I should imagine that that the plastic was indeed some form of waterproofing. If it was me, I would just replace it with new lino and go round the edges with a clear sealant to stop any water getting underneath. Unless anyone else has any other ideas?
