Problem With Gas

by Robert
(Preston Lancs)

My caravan cooker works on gas with no problem but the gas fire and fridge do not want to start on gas - what could be the problem? I really need help with this.

Gas appliances in caravans can have their gas supply individually isolated by turning off the relevant tap. The tap is either located on a gas manifold or directly beside the appliance. Check to see if the taps for the fridge and fire are in the on position.

Gas Attachment
by: Anonymous

Just got a brand new caravan. The gas regulator is now attached to the van and I bought a connecting pipe for my bottle which can be butane or propane.

Silly question. I notice there is no sort of rubber seal on the connecting nut, just bare metal. Is this right.

Thanks

Hi
I have a full bottle of gas but when I went to turn on the cooker there was no gas
Any ideas please

It could be that the gas valve on your manifold for your cooker is in the off position. The manifold is normally located in the kitchen area. It is normally at floor level and might be inside a cupboard. Once you have found it, make sure that the valve to your cooker is switched on and try again. Also make sure that the valve on your gas bottle is switched on too. If that still doesn't work, then you might have a fault valve that will need to be looked at by a qualified caravan mechanic.

'J' Gas
by: Sarah

Hi my mum lives in a static caravan on a site, she has just had her gas bill in for one quarter and they are asking for £350 for 3 months as they are saying that the cost of 'J/Jay' gas has gone up and they are having to charge residents £2.50 per unit- can you please confirm if this is normal as it appears very high to me.

Thanks

Not having owned a static, I am not really sure. I always though that statics our supplied by stand alone bottles and once your bottle is empty, you simply change it over. Having spoken to several people who own statics, they said that the average bottle will cost around £100 and that they get through about 2 a season.

Heater Gas Engineer

by Petra
(Sevenoaks)

I am interested in a motorhome and the guy who is selling has never used the heater so not sure how to use or if it indeed works. Can anyone tell me how I go about getting it checked? Thanks

Your best bet would be to use a qualified Mobile Gas Engineer. Why not try The Mobile Caravan Engineers Association (MCEA). They have a website at www.mcea.co.uk and there you will be able to find an engineer nearest to your location.

Gas Regulator - Lunar Quasar EB

by Peter
(Crewe)

The gas regulator on our 2006 EB has stopped working. Is this a design problem as it the second time we have had this problem on EBs? What can we do to repair or replace the regulator?

We had the same problem on our Bailey Pageant Provence. We took our caravan back to our dealer who confirmed it was a design problem and replaced it with an updated regulator. Apparently the old design was prone to clogging up. I would suggest that you speak to your local dealer and ask them what would be the best course of action.

Awful truma regulators
by: Anonymous

We also had the same problem TWICE with a Lunar Quasar EB (2005 model). We had a replacement fitted in 2008 when one failed, and the replacement failed in 2011. Despite very carefully telling the dealer the part number on the existing one, they looked at the Truma website and said it was 10mm. When a fitter arrived to fit it, he said it should have been the 8mm version - another long trip to the dealer and another wait for a fitter. I would never buy a Truma regulator by choice - I believe there are now regulators from alternative suppliers that work!

Gas Tap Location

by Simon
(Burnley)

We have just bought a 1993 Lunar Meteorite caravan two berth. Does anyone know where the gas isolation taps for the fridge and heater are located in it?

The isolation valves are generally hidden away at the bottom of a cupboard. We have a Bailey and ours are in the pan draw at the bottom of the oven.

Does anyone own a Lunar Meteorite and can advise Simon as to where they are exactly on his caravan?

Gas

by Jim Roy
(Scotland)

Please can you advise what is the best type of gas to use PROPANE OR BUTANE ???

Butane is a more efficient heat producer than Propane and is the preferred choice on many caravaners. However, if you are going to use your caravan in the winter or in colder weather, then Propane is ideal. This is because it can withstand temperatures as low as -40 C.

Just remember that whatever gas you use, you will need the correct regulator. The regulators for Butane and Propane are different.

Gas Cooker

by Dave
(London)

Hi, my gas cooker in my caravan won't light. The central heating is fine. The gas bottles are full. Please coud you tell me what's wrong.

In your caravan, there should be a manifold with individual taps for each gas appliance. The manifold is usual located in the locker under the oven. Once you have found it, make sure the tap for the oven is open and try lighting your oven again. If this does not work, I would advise that you take your caravan to your local dealer and ask them to take a look at it.

Size of Gas Bottle

by Katrina

Firstly can I say how brill your website is, it's been a big help to us as we are total novices and we have just bought our first caravan! What size gas bottle is best please? We have a 4 berth Lunar Apollo 464, and we need to keep the weight down as much as possible!

To reduce weight, your best bet would be to go for a light weight gas bottle. Both Calor and BP have produce this form of bottle. The BP bottle is semi transparent which make it easier to see when your bottle needs replacing. As for the size you need, it will be dependent on how much gas you generally use. A 6kg bottle should be sufficient.

Gas Tap

by Robin
(Cumbria, UK)

can you help me i have just bought an abi award brightstar i cannot find the tap to turn the gas on to the cooker.

Each gas appliance has a seperate valve on a manifold. The manifold is normally located in a base unit or at the bottom of the oven (pan draw).

Propane suitable or not?

by Debbie
(Cannock, Staffordshire)

Hello, we have an Ace Superstar Supreme tourer and want to know if it is suitable to use propane gas in it as we are unsure? Many thanks for your help with this.

Providing that you have the correct regulator fitted for Propane gas, then it should be absolutely fine. You should be able to buy a regulator fron either your local caravan dealer or a bottled gas supplier.

GAS BOTTLE SIZE

Hello,
Collecting a Bailey Ranger 470/4 2007 model next weekend - our first caravan for 30 years. Do you know what size gas bottles I will need - this one has a locker whilst our old Monza circa 1978 had a small bottle bolted to the A-frame.
Many thanks for your help.
Tony, Cockermouth, Cumbria

The standard 7kg Butane cylinder will be fine. However, we use a Propane 6kg cylinder purely on the basis that it works at lower temperatures. Make sure you have the correct regulator. Butane and Propane have diffrent regulators. Your local dealer will be able to advise you which one you need. BP and Calor make a lighter bottle which you might want to consider. This will help to keep your weight down and also they are translucent, so you can see how much gas you have left inside the bottle.

Gas bottle rip off?

by Linda
(Hampshire)

Hello
I have a static caravan and the site charge £72 for a gas cylinder, in the past 12 weeks my guests have apparently used 3. My daughter uses the same one for cooking (there's 7 of them and they do a lot of cooking) in her house and one has lasted her well over a year.

Does this sound right to you?
Thanks

Are there any static caravan owners out there who could help answer this question?
If so please send us a reply and we will post your comments.

Gas Bottle Consumption
by: Anonymous

Assuming a 45kg propane bottle - both the price and consumption are surprising. I assume the gas bottle heats the water too so maybe they took a lot of hot showers or did washing. We chain our bottles so other site owners cannot pinch our gas. I once had a leak from the connector on top of the bottle which might be worth checking although the person who delivers and changes over should check that. With no heating on we find our summer usage minimal.

Outside Gas Connector

by Tony
(Southport)

I have a Lunar Clubman 530-4 (2006) caravan and I need to know what gas connector to use so I can use a cooker or barbeque outside the caravan. Many thanks.

I believe all you need to do is to remove the regulator from your barbeque and the attach the end of the hose to the outside gas point on your caravan and tighten in place using a jubilee clip.
Then simply turn the valve to the on position to allow the gas to flow through.

External BBQ point on LUNAR LEXON EB 2001

by STEVE
(NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE , UK)

Hi ,could anyone point me in the right direction of the external gas BQ point on my LUNAR LEXON EB 2001 , we have only had it a short while , and now own a gas BQ , so it would of real good help to be given the directions as to its location . THANKS for your help in advance.

If your caravan is fitted with a BBQ point, it is normally located on the left hand side of the caravan near to the front locker. If it is not there, it might be located inside the locker itself. However, if you can't find it then you probably don't have one fitted.

Gas Taps

by David
(Argyll)

Hi,
Please could you advise as to where the gas taps are situated in a Bailey Ranger 510/4 2002.
Thanks.

The isolation valves are normally situtated together. Try looking at the bottom of one of your kitchen cupboards. We have a Bailey Senator and that is where ours is located.

Gas propane fittings

What fitting is used in a Sterling Eccles Topaz 2003, to connect to propane bottles?

Because propane has a much higher vapour pressure to Butane, you will need to change your regulator. If you go to your local dealer or gas supplier, they should be able to advise and supply you with the correct fitting.

Truma gas regulator leak

by Rod Smith
(Salisbury)

I have a leak from the yellow plug on the side of the truma gas regulator ce036 typ en61-ds fitted to my 2008 Elddis Avante 362. The regulator was replaced 18 months ago for the same fault. Is this a known problem that can be easily fixed? What is the cause? If a new regulator is fitted can I be confident that that will not leak ?

I am not aware that this is a common problem. You really need to get this sorted by a qualified gas engineer. You could contact Elddis direct and ask them for their thoughts on this matter.

Gas pipe on a Fleetwood Colchester

by Chris
(Middleton, Manchester, G.B.)

I have recently bought a Touring Fleetwood Colchester 1998 Caravan but not used it yet. I noticed when putting in my gas bottles that the flexible gas hose was not connected to anything. I can't see where it should be connected and don't have the owners handbook. Has anyone got a diagram of where it should be fitted to please?
Thank you in advance
Chris

At the end of the flexible rubber hose, there should be a regulator attached which fits onto your gas bottle. The type of regulator that you need will be dependant on what gas you are using (butane or propane). When fitting a new regulator, I would also advise that you fit a new flexible hose.

Regulator
by: Chris

Thank you for your comment. It has got the regulator on one end, but it's the other end that is not connected to anything and I can't see where it connects to. So if anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate them.
Thank you
Chris

The other end of the flexible hose should be connected to a bulkhead adaptor using a jubilee clip. This is normally found in your gas locker. If you can't find it in your gas locker, try tracing the copper gas pipes underneath your caravan to see where they lead.

Changing Gas from Butane to Propane

by Mr John Richards
(Northampton)

I've just purchased a Elddis Crusader Aurora caravan year 2006 and I want to change the gas from butane to propane. What gas fittings will I need to change this and are the fittings all one size? Kind Regards, John

Butane and Propane take different regulators. If you go to your local caravan dealer, they should be able to supply you with everything you need to make this change over.

Do you turn the gas off completely

by Sarah
(Berkshire)

Do you turn the gas supply off completely to the boiler in a static caravan when you are not using it ? Any information would be appreciated

Not having owned a static, I asked some friends who have one. They said that when they are not using during the oprn season, they leave the gas on but turn the thermostat down to the frost setting.

Gas

Hi, I have a ABI Dalesman 520 LB. When I brought it a few weeks ago there was a smell of gas !! There is a valve or something like that under the heater which is broken in two can someone tell me what this is so I know what I am looking for ?? As you can tell I know nothing about caravans first time buying one. Need to make this safe as won't to take three kids away soon. Thanks.

I would strongly recommend that you take your caravan to your local dealer and ask them to give your caravan a service. Anything to do with gas must be done by a qualified and registered gas engineer.

Static Caravan Gas Bill

by Shaznay
(Dumfries)

I bought a static caravan 01-03-13 & have just received a gas bill of £551.08 dated til 15.06.13 I do use the caravan on a weekly basis & did use the central heatin in the colder weather but just feel this is way too expensive.!

My parents in law own a static carvan which is sited in Norfolk. They pay for gas bottles as and when it runs out. I think they are charged about £80 to £100 per bottle (I can't be certain though). They are big bottles and they use about 1 to 2 bottles a season. So going by that I would say that the £551.08 is expensive. Ask the site owners to clarify this charge and for a break down of your usage.
