Caravan Security

After purchasing your new caravan, you need to think about any caravan security products you need. After all, you wouldn't want your new pride and joy stolen before you have used it! Well, we are here to help ... Always remember - your caravan is a target for thieves and most caravan crime is preventable. Over 2000 caravans go missing every year - you wouldn't want yours to be one of them. The more security devices you have fitted the better, but don't be daunted by the number of devices available at caravan accessory shops or caravan dealers - we are here to help and give advice.

Most insurers require you to take some security precautions before they will insure your caravan. Check with your insurer to see if they insist on any particular products - some insurers even give discounts if you have specific devices fitted!

The first thing to do is to ensure that your caravan is registered with CRiS (Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme). This is a national register for all UK touring caravans, similar to the DVLA system for cars. This provides a log book system containing the history of your caravan, plus a checking service for touring caravan keepers and dealers. If you have purchased your caravan from a dealer, they should have explained about CRiS. For more information on CRiS click here.

There are many different kinds of security devices on the market :

Immobilising devices e.g. Alko wheel lock, wheel clamps, hitchlocks, corner steady locks, mule, locking post, winter wheels,

Making your caravan secure e.g. caravan alarms, tracker systems

Other security measures
- Things I can do myself to make my caravan more safe and secure e.g. Fiamma door lock, adhesive letters, etc.

Buying security devices and caravan insurance isn't as exciting as buying caravan accessories, but always remember, purchasing security devices is a lot cheaper than having to buy a new caravan!

We have received the following tips from Pete -

Just a quick tip for those of you who store or park your caravans for a long period of time.

Once you have got your caravan level and secure with the corner steadies down, use wheel chocks to prevent the van moving (although the corner steadies will do this) and then release the handbrake. This will prevent the brakes seizing on.

For added security I use a hitch lock that, when attached to the hitch, forms a circle of steel around the hitch. I also use two different types of wheel clamp. If anyone tries to remove them they will need different equipment for each one. It makes the thiefs life even harder. I was "lucky" to suffer a failed attempted theft. I'm now so paranoid that I have a baby monitor in my caravan when its parked at home - that way I will hear someone banging around my caravan!

Many thanks to Pete for these brilliant tips.

Happy Caravanning!
