Caravan Servicing

by Lesley Matthews
(South Shields, UK)

Can you tell me what is completed when a caravan service takes place. We need to have ours serviced before we take it out early next year but obviously want to check that what should be done has been done.

The term Servicing can be classed as wide opened. But a typical Service should include the following:

Chassis and Running Gear i.e. Brakes, coupling head, breakaway cable, tyres etc.

Gas - A pressure test on the system should be carried out. The regulator and hose should be checked. The fridge and heater and cooker should also be tested.

Electrical system - This should also be throughly tested

Water system - i.e pump, filter. Checks should be made for any leaks. The toilet should be checked.

Body Work - A damp and seepage test should be carried out. Sealant on joints should be inspected. Windows should be checked and lubricated in need be. Door lock and hinges checked and oiled.

If there is a smoke detector / estinguisher these should be checked. Also the leisure battery should be checked.

If you are in any doubt, ask for a list of work that will be carried out prior to servicing. That way you can double check what has been actually done. Also, if there are any faults that need rectifying, tell them before the service is carried out, so they can be done at the same time.

I live in Portsmouth and have just purchased a COMPASS RAYLLE 360 -2berth.(not sure of its age but is intact and I felt good towing it from Southampton to Portsmouth)It's an old van but has last been used last year, needs some checkup and or servicing before I use it.

I don't want to fall pray to wrong servicing engineers. What is your advice?

The best thing to would be to ask your local caravan dealer to service it for you.

How Much For A Caravan Service?

by John
(Wirral)

Do you know how much it usually costs to get an average caravan serviced?

A standard service should cost from about £150 to £200 through a dealer. However, it might be cheaper if you used a mobile caravan engineer. Why not try The Mobile Caravan Engineers Association (MCEA). They have a website at www.mcea.co.uk.

Annual Testing

by Annette
(Renfrewshire)

I have just bought an old caravan. I was wondering if like car that you have to have an annual test done with a certificate to prove that it is road worthy?

At the moment there is no law stating that a caravan has to have an M.O.T. However, it is the owners responsibility to ensure his or hers caravan is in a safe and road worthy condition.

For the safety of my family and other road users, I always have my caravan serviced every year.

Servicing the Caravan

by Ella
(Buckinghamshire)

I need some help - Do you know generally how long it would take for a caravan to be serviced as I have never had mine serviced before? Many thanks for your help.

A standard service should normally take between 2 and 3 hours. When I take my caravan for it's yearly service, I normally drop it off on my way to work and then pick it up at the end of the day.

Caravan Servicing

(North Yorkshire)

What am I actually required to service in a caravan service programme or must I employ the services of an engineer. Is there a set requirement as in the annual motor vehicle MOT.

Although there is no MOT requirement for a caravan, it is the owners responsibilty to keep their caravan in a roadworthy condition. We have our caravan serviced every year by our local dealer.

The term Servicing can be classed as wide opened. But a typical Service should include the following:

Chassis and Running Gear i.e. Brakes, coupling head, breakaway cable, tyres etc.

If there is a smoke detector / estinguisher these should be checked. Also the leisure battery should be checked.

If you are having the service carried out by a dealer and are in any doubt, ask for a list of work that will be carried out prior to servicing. That way you can double check what has been actually done. Also, if there are any faults with your caravan that need rectifying, tell them before the service is carried out, so they can be done at the same time.
