Alko Spare Wheel Carrier for Fleetwood

Does anyone have any idea which model of Alko spare wheel carrier I would need for a 1996 Fleetwood Garland 148-1 EK? I see on Alko's website there are different sizes.

If you email Alko direct and tell the the make, model and year of your caravan, they will be able to advise you of the correct size.

Tyres - Lunar 520
by: Anonymous

Hi can anyone advise me on tyre replacements for a Lunar 520 2005 caravan, our caravan is on a permanent site miles away from our home and because of ill health we need to bring the caravan back from site.

But before we can get my son to go and collect it it will need tyres renewing before towing. We don't know what size to buy for son to take with him to change them!!!

Bit of a silly question I know but can anyone out there possibly HELP please.

Space Saver Spares For Towing With

by Mark
(Mansfield, Nottinghamshire)

What are your thoughts on using space saver spare wheels for towing a caravan with such a spare please? Most internet chat seems to be against it, but no hard & fast rule either way.

Keep up the good work with the site, it's very helpful for novices like ourselves.

Kind regards

I personally would never tow a caravan whilst using a space saver. The idea of the space saver is just to get you to a safe location where you can have your tyre repaired or changed. The space saver tyre also has load restrictions and I am pretty certain that they are not designed to be towed with.

Caravan Spacesaver Spare Wheel
by: Dave Dorking

I have an Elddis Crusader Cyclone, on a BPW twin axle chassis, fitted with a Powerwheel twin motor mover. Unfortunately because of the mover I have lost my spare wheel carrier (they didnt tell me this when I ordered it I just found the spare wheel under the bed some weeks later). Powerwheel offer a conversion to an Alko carrier but this does not fit the Cyclone because of the hot air hoses in the chassis. Powerwheel cannot offer a solution so I am running without a spare. One idea is to carry a spacesaver wheel in the front locker. Does anyone know the PCD of the Crusader fitment so that a spacesaver could be identified. Any suggestions for a solution would be welcome, Powerwheel seem to have walked away from the problem. Thanks, Dave.

You could try National Vehicle Solutions. They might be able to help. Their contact details can be found on our website. Click on Motor Mover on the menu bar on our home page and then scroll down the page.

Changing Caravan Wheels

by Jim Boyd
(N Ireland)

Do you know whether I could fit 14 inch alloy wheels to my year 2000 Bailey Ranger 470/4 caravan ? Many thanks for any help you could give me with this.

Providing you have 14" wheels already on your Ranger 470/4 and the wheel nuts are in the same position on the alloys you want to fit, then there should be no problem. Just remember to fit the correct caravan tyres (you cannot use ordinary car tyres).

Spare Wheel - Lunar LX 2000 Caravan

I have just purchased a Lunar LX 2000 Caravan and I am not sure if it has a spare wheel. Does anyone know where the spare should be located if there is one?

Most spare wheels are either located in the front locker order or are located under the caravan in a special carrier.

Wheel Size

by Phil Barton
(Manchester )

Hi, I am trying to purchase some wheel trims as a present for my dad. He has a Eldiss Whisp 450e 1991. Please can you advise on wheel size 13 or 14? Thanks.

The easiest way to find out is to look on the tyre itself. Somewhere on the tyre there will be a marking like 165/70R13 or similar. The number 13 indicates the rim diameter in inches. So whatever the number that is on your father's caravan tyres will indicate what the rim size you need for the wheel trims.

Avondale 380-2 Spare Wheel

by Geoff Hall
(Faversham, Kent)

I have the usual uninformative instruction manual for my Avondale caravan - Do you know how I get to the underslung spare wheel on this model of caravan?

If you have an ALKO spare wheel carrier fitted to your caravan and it has not been moved for a while, you should spray all moving parts with WD40 or similar and leave for while. Then unscrew the black cap and pull the carrier forward and then lower. This should reveal your spare wheel.

Where Is The Caravan Spare Wheel?

by Steve Beamer
(Liverpool)

Please could someone tell me where the spare wheel and jack are usually kept on a 2001 Bailey Pageant caravan ? Many thanks for your help with this, Steve.

Believe it or not, alot of caravans are not sold with a spare wheel or jack. They are termed as extras. So unless your caravan came with a spare wheel (usually fitted under the caravan or in your front locker) you probably won't have one.
If you intend on buying one, make sure that the correct tyre is fitted (car tyres are not suitable). As for the jack, I would recommend something like the Kojack made by Purpleline.

Balanced Tyres

Do caravan tyres have to be balanced?

I am not really sure to be honest. We have never had ours balance but we always make sure that the tow car wheels are balanced.

Get them Checked
by: Ted Duggan

I am an X Mechanic and my thoughts are that they should be balanced .....Any unbalanced wheel will wear out the wheel bearings in time and you dont want a wheel coming off or seizing up on you when your on the motorway.

GET THEM CHECKED is my advice

Tyre size

by Cheryl
(Blackburn)

I'm just in the process of buying a Lunar Clubman 530 L (year 2000) and want to buy the wheel clamp before I collect it. Do you know what size the tyres will be?

If you are buying it through a dealer/shop, they should be able to advise you what size clamp you need. All you have to do is to tell them what caravan you have.

Which Wheel Clamp for Cotswold Windrush

by Susa
(North Wales)

Can anyone help as I need to find out which wheel clamp I need to buy to fit a Cotswold Windrush 1993 caravan. I hope you will be able to help me with this!

The best thing to do, is to go to your local dealer and tell them the make and model of your caravan and they should be able to tell you exactly what size clamp you need.

Jockey Wheel Puncture

by Tony Jackson
(Norwich)

Please could you help me - with all four corner legs down, can I release my jockey wheel to enable me to repair a puncture? Many thanks for your help with this.

In theory, yes you can but you should never use your steadies as a form of a jack to lift your caravan. By doing this, it can result in a damage mechanism and will also distort the chassis. What I would do, is repair the jockey wheel whilst still hooked up to the car.

Caravans and Spare Wheels

I've noticed many large caravans carry spare wheels. However, my small Adria Optima 400B has no spare wheel, only two cans of tyreweld. Given their size and not inconsiderable weight, what is the general thinking regarding whether a carrying spare wheel is worth the extra onboard weight or whether tyreweld is a more practical solution in the event of a puncture?

We always carry a spare wheel in case of a puncture. I personally would not use tyre weld because it is very messy when it comes to replacing the tyre. We carry our spare under the caravan in a wheel carrier. Al-Ko have made a wheel carrier special designed to fit their chassis and is quite easy to fit. The cost is of their carrier is about £100. However, on first caravan which was a Marauder 400D, we put the spare wheel inside the caravan(over the axle). When we got to our location, we then just put the spare tyre under the caravan. It was not too much of a hassle and it was just a question of making sure that the load inside the caravan was balanced correctly and did not exceed the recommended payload.

Fleetwood Sonata brake shoes, where do I get them and what are the correct parts?

by Andy Dominick
(Scotland)

I have a 2004 Fleetwood Sonata, I need new brake shoes but have no idea what part numbers I require or where to get the information from, can anyone help.

There are a few alko brake shoes on ebay but there are various sizes so I have no idea where to start.

Best Regards
Andy

The best way of being sure, is to either remove the existing shoes on your caravan and take them your local garage and ask them if they can supply you with them or you could ask your local caravan dealer.

What size wheel lock?

by Chris
(Shropshire)

I have just bought a 2005 Coachman Pastiche 520/4. I am looking for a wheel lock and wondered what size I need. One I have seen is for 8" - 10".
The caravan is still at the dealers at the moment and I want to buy one on line as it will be cheaper than buying from the dealer. Thanks.

If you contact the Dealer and tell them that you want to buy a wheel lock, they should tell you the size you need. They should not mind that you are not buying one from them. However, they might surprise you and offer you a really good discount on one.

Spare wheel for Elddis Firestorm

Is it safe to store the spare wheel in the front compartment of my Elddis caravan when we are towing. It is quite heavy and there are already gas bottles in there. I wondered if it would make the nose weight too much?

When we had our first 2 caravans, we tended to put the spare wheel inside the caravan on the floor over the axle when towing. When we pitched up, we just put the spare wheel under the caravan. Now we have a spare wheel carrier which is located under the caravan which is alot better.

Spare wheel for Elddis Firestorm

On my Sterling Venturers the spare wheel mount is in the front box and I also have two gas bottles fitted.. The nose weight is still only just 70 kg. Best to load it and check the nose weight is correct for your set-up.

Brake Shoe Size

by Bill Thomson
(Perthshire,)

Do you know what size of shoe kit I need for my caravan? It's an Elddis Typhoon 2000 caravan. I ordered 200 by 50 and when it arrived it was too small. Please can you help.

The best thing I can suggest, is to either contact Elddis direct or to contact your local dealer. They should be able to advise you with the correct size. You could try contacting Perthshire Caravans (www.perthshirecaravans.com)

Sprite Musketeer Braking Layout

by Luke
(Norfolk)

My in-laws have a Sprite Musketeer single axle van from around 1990ish. They had a problem with the brakes and have been told parts are unobtainable and it is unsafe to tow. I can understand the unsafe part, but surely parts can't be impossible to obtain?

Is there a layout of the braking system available anywhere to have a look at and try to repair it ourselves? Obviously any work would be checked by a technician before being put back on the road!

The garage it was taken to is extremely vague with whats actually wrong with it, so we figure looking at it ourselves may reveal more!

Your best bet of obtaining the part/parts that you need is through a caravan breakers yard. Most offer a mail order service, so distance should not be a problem. A list of breakers can be found on our website. Not sure of the diagram though, unless anyone else can help.

Thanks. The springs are hooked onto sliding washers on the brake rod. These were actually seized with rust, not fixed as I had thought, so when I freed them I was able to find appropriate springs quite easily.
