Caravan with Disabled Modification

by Chris
(Perth, Australia)

I have a young man in a wheelchair who requires a hoist and shower trolly to maintain his personal hygene is there a caravan out there with these facilities.

There are several companies in the UK that specialise in adapting caravans for disabled use, but sadly not enough manufacturers cater for the people with disablities (mainly due to the expense). Your best bet would be to find a company in Australia that would be able to convert a standard caravan to meet your requirements.

Handles to help Caravan Entry

Where would I get a handle for the outside caravan door to assist elderly person to enter, fold away maybe? Many thanks for your help with this.

Milenco make a security handle which may be suitable for you. It is not cheap at about £60, but it not only is a handle but also adds extra security to your caravan.

Three Tread Caravan Steps for Disabled Person

by Terry Blockley
(Lincolnshire, UK)

Who sells or manufactures 3 tread lightweight steps with handrail for a disabled person who cannot step higher that 6/7 inches at a time. Floor to bottom of tourer doorway is 22 inches. Have tried Internet, sent drawings to a manufacturer but cost in region of £500 for a one off job!!!! Other problem is restriction by Health & Safety legislation. Any ideas please.

We have trawled the internet and have come up with the following companies who might be worth trying:

www.djleisure.co.uk
www.pvsholdings.com
www.trimetals.co.uk
www.jrmetaldesign.co.uk

Or have you tried searching on Ebay for three tread caravan steps as there were a few on there when I had a look.

Good luck with your search - and if you do manage to find some which are not extortionately expensive please let us know where you got them from so we can put it on here to help others.

Disabled

by Michael
(England)

Please could you advise if you know of any caravan manufacturers who will adapt caravans for wheelchairs etc. Many thanks for your help regarding this.

Simon Fry of Fry's Caravans has developed the unique wheel chair Axcess Caravan giving wheel chair access throughout the caravan. With an open wet room, fixed steel single bed with underneath storage facilites or large double steel framed bed also an optional hoist to lift from wheel chair to wet room to bed!

They have been designed to allow full wheelchair access both in and through the caravan. They have bespoke entrance ramps and there are items such as an electric entrance lift, toilet push bars, wetroom chair, lifting hoist and motor mover which are all optional extras. Although the price is around £19,000, it is definetely worth a look.

Frys Caravans in East Yorkshire have them on permanent display, or you can visit their website at www.frys.co.uk/frystar_axcess.
