Here's an interesting message from Bob W. with a cautionary tale. Have a read ...
Our first caravan was a 198??? Abbey Piper with whale foot pump for water and a kettle for hot water. We used to struggle getting it back in the front garden so didn't take it out often. Then our two daughters and families decided they were going to move and chose Dorking, each taking on a house either side of the town. It was then we decided to look for a suitable storage site local to them so we could visit as frequently as we could (we had to get a mortgage on the fuel for the car!).We chose a farm in Newdigate, not far away on which to store the caravan and further up the same road was a CL site with fishing lake. Over the year we had been looking around s/hand caravan dealers with the idea of buying a later caravan with mod cons and 4 berths so we could take the grandchildren. Eventually we found what we wanted at a dealers in Gomshall and did the deal putting our Piper in part-exchange and he accepted even without seeing it. We went home to West London and the following week went to the Dorking farm to collect the Piper and tell the farmer we have a bigger caravan to store. We arrived turned the corner at the edge of the barn to stare at an empty space where the Piper should have been. Checked with the farmer on his mobile no he hadn't moved it - it was there two days ago. So we left and stopped on the way at our daughter who lived on route to the Gomshall dealer and told her we think it’had been stolen. She asked whether the caravan had a lock on it – yes, a good hitch lock was fitted. Anyway, we reported it and went on to collect the new s/hand purchase and explain why we haven't got the Piper. We were surprised as to the dealers relief as they didn't really want to be stuck with a caravan over 18yrs old he said but deal stays. So off we went towing our new purchase then when we tried to insure it we were told it was a year older than the dealer had advertised it at. We contacted the dealer as the insurance value was less than we paid. Offer came of a full refund but we said we are prepared to compromise by item if they wished, so we ended up with a few things free of charge. The police said it will most likely be found in a lay-by up north with the wheels missing, hob and oven missing plus all the internal lights stripped out. However, I have come to the conclusion that the best deterrent unless the thieves are really determined are Winter Wheels.’ Don't let this happen to you!
Here's a really inspiring e-mail received from Helen. Have a read ...
Hi, just wanted to tell people about my dads caravan that was stolen in January 2010. He had a Lunar 1995 which he brought so he and my mum, who had cancer, could go away when ever they wanted. After my mum passed away, the caravan wasn't used so I looked after it on my driveway. On January 6 2010 at approx 8.30pm two men and three young children were seen taking the caravan off the drive with a white transit van. They had cut the big chain that we had on it. I was so upset, so I set to work looking for it - every week 3-4 times a week I looked on sale sites. I was told by my family after 6 months that I was mad for still looking for it, but this gave my mum so much joy, I wasn't ever going to give up. Well, nearly a year to the day the caravan turned up for sale on E-bay. I informed the police and they contacted E-bay for the address but had to wait, so I got a friend of a friend to find the address. All I had was the name of the seller but after a lot of twoing and froing - 5 weeks later we got the caravan back. The man that had it had bought it from a local auction where he lives and then decided he didn't want it so put it on E-bay. Now I must add, don't ever give up trying to find your caravan. It can happen that it turns up in places that are used by every day people. I've now got a wheel clamp and I've taken the hitch off of it, so it cant be towed away unless you have one with you. I am also getting an Alko hitch lock when I can afford it and will have to do some small repairs but nothing major - I am just over the moon to have the old girl back. Now I have been told I have MS, I'm going to use it as much as I can with my kids for weekends away, and summer hoildays should be fun as I want to see as much of England as I can before I can't do it any more. Thanks for reading and remember a woman never gives up, Helen.

Your caravan is a target for thieves and most caravan crime is preventable. Over 2000 caravans go missing every year - you wouldn't want yours to be one of them. The more security devices you have fitted the better.
Have a look at our Caravan Security page to see what you could do to increase the security of your caravan.
Buying security devices and caravan insurance isn't as exciting as buying caravan accessories, but always remember, purchasing security devices is a lot cheaper than having to buy a new caravan!
